Just when the some good news about the Gulf oil spill disaster was starting to emerge, we’ve learned that a 20-foot tall geyser of oil has begun squirting skyward today in Mud Lake, near Plaquamines Parish in Lousiana. The Associated Press is reporting that a barge named Pere Ana C. hit an underwater wellhead triggering the leak.

A containment boom–of which there are many in the Gulf these days–was deployed to surround the leak, and there have been no reports of any injuries.

Deano Bonano, an emergency management official in Jefferson Parish, said the spill was “miniscule” when compared with the damage that has been caused by the millions of gallons of oil that spilled from the Deepwater Horizon rig beginning in April.

It is unclear how long relief efforts will take to cap this latest spill.
