Once you enter your destination, the site gives you a list of registered users that are going in your direction. Ridester is a similar site that gets you in touch with anyone traveling anywhere in the US, while eRideshare is usually used by commuters to go to work. If you worried about who you are going to be riding with, Zimride connects you to friends, classmates and coworkers that are going the same way as you. The website integrates your Facebook community and also focuses on universities and corporate communities so you don’t have to worry about who you’re riding with.

GoPlanIt was good in theory (eg. customized suggested itineraries) and it’s a pretty site. But they never seemed to generate the levels of traffic that would make it truly functional. Two years later we have Trazzler but this also doesn’t seem to be catching on (judging by Quantcast traffic). My gut tells me people want to plan their own trips. Location, budget, length of stay, etc…those are all important for making decisions. But an algorithm will never work if you don’t really know the personality of the person. Hunch.com may succeed (and I believe Chris Dixon is a backer of Trazzler) but it’s not there yet, either.
