New York City’s famed Guggenheim Museum and German automaker BMW today announced a breakthrough partnership to engage people around the world on the destiny of our cities. The BMW Guggenheim Lab will “engage a new generation of leaders in architecture, art, science, design, technology, and education, who will address the challenges of the cities of tomorrow by examining the realities of the cities of today.”
The project will feature a mobile lab that will travel to three cities for a period of two years each, beginning in early 2011. This video below explains the scope of the new endeavor in the voices of the people who will stand to benefit and participate in the mobile labs rollout.
The partnership seems to be a natural fit. The Guggenheim Foundation is located in New York, but the Guggenheim collections now dot the globe as emblems of high art and architecture in cities such as Bilbao, Spain, Berlin Venice and Abu Dhabi. BMW has long been known for it’s luxury automobile that combine style, performance and dependability. Recently BMW announced its new line of electric mopeds, the Mini Scooter E, which provides a non-polluting alternative to vehicular travel in cities.
We only wonder if the suburbs are due up for such swanky digs to discuss their future. A lot of people live there too.
