Pack up your fixie, messenger bag, non-prescription plastic glasses and tapered black jeans — you’re taking a trip on the Hipster Express.
Starting Friday, a new bus will be running directly from Washington’s Hip U Street to Brooklyn’s Atlantic Terminal Terminal, entirely bypassing Manhattan and downtown Washington.
Several other operators — like BoltBus and MegaBus — already operate the discount route from New York-to-D.C., but then they can’t always guarantee an ironic mustache on board.
The bus will have free wi-fi, a laptop borrowing service, and bike parking for all the fixies (though they say they’ll allow you to park your bike regardless of brand or type).
Officially know as the The Know It Express, the bus is an effort by Shalonda Hunter, who started the Washington culture and site TheKnowIt.
The idea is to provide transportation for the young, urban traveler who isn’t interested in doing the toursity thing.
Nichole Remmert, who’s handling PR told TBD, “We know the kind of people who live around U Street. They’re younger, more vibrant, more creative.”
“Anybody is welcome, but it’s definitely more for the sort of folks who are interested in looking at things off the beaten path, interested in getting to know neighborhoods, and interested in scraping the surface and seeing more than the Statue of Liberty and the Washington Monument.”
The service will also give you promotional deals at local bars and restaurants in the two cities.
According to the company’s website: “Our mission is to not just take you where you want to go but show you what to do when you get there. We are a local company that supports local. We want our riders to not only think of us as their preferred transportation but also their trusted guide to get to know their destination.”
The bus will operate Friday to Monday in both directions, at $20 one-way.
The bus also promises to be more social and if you have the undying urge to listen to your iPod on the loud speakers, the driver might just oblige.
Jokes aside, we’re always glad to have access to more public transportation!
