Duggar Family Expecting 20th Child, Carbon Footprint Now Larger Than Ethiopian Village
by Chikodi ChimaAmerica’s most fertile Family, the Duggars of Tontitown, AR, are expecting a new bundle of joy, when oldest son Josh Duggar, and his 22-year-old wife, Anna, give birth to their second child in June 2011, according to news reports. The couple’s first child, Mackynzie Renée, the first grandchild of progenitors Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, was born on Oct. 8, 2009.
The Duggar family leaped to notoriety, and landed a show on the TLC network, 19 Kids & Counting because of their prolific ability to bear children, but also because of their strong family ties. All 18 of the Duggar children also have names that start with the letter J.
America is a free country, and a responsible, involved couple is free to have as many children as they want, and give them all names that start with the letter J, if they so chose, however, here is something to think about.
The “typical” American family now has 2.6 members, according to the US Census Bureau, and lives in a 2,094 square foot home, according to Ecopolitology. The Duggar family is already as large as 7.7 typical American families–before more grandchildren are born–and lives in a house that is 3.3 times larger than is normal.
According to Mindfully.org, the average American consumes as much energy as 13 Chinese or 370 Ethiopians. Energy consumption in China is expected to increase 75 percent by 2035, according to The New York Times, representing one third of all growth in global energy demand. This is in a country with a one child policy, a strict mandate limiting couples to just one child per family. However, with its industrial boom underway, as well as rising levels of affluence and changing consumer habits in China are going to contribute to the growth of
Therefore, the Duggar family has the same energy footprint as 260 Chinese or 7,030 Ethiopians, whom we believe have an equal right to a comfortable lifestyle and their fair share of the Earth’s limited resources.
One of the reasons why the Duggar family became a television sensation is because of their ability to crank out babies and still maintain strong bonds with each, requiring every child to learn to play an instrument, and scheduling time for one-on-one chats weekly. It’s great that the Duggars are involved parents who nurture their children and have a strong family life, something that is missing in dual parent families with just one or two children Part of responsible parenting, however, is teaching about environmental stewardship, and this is a lesson that will certainly be lost.
