The electric charging industry is sure getting crowded. And now Toyota has announced that it will launch its own home electric car charger.
While Toyota’s charger will work with non-Toyota cars, this definitely seems like a way for Toyota to sell its chargers to people buying the plug-in Prius. The Japanese manufacturer is hoping to sell 50,000 plug-in Prii (Toyota recently announced that, Prii was the plural form of Prius!) starting in 2012.
Toyota is planning on building two types of chargers at this point — one that will work from the exterior wall of a house, and the other that can be installed in a garage. The most expensive charger is estimated to cost about $2427.
Recently every major electric and manufacturing company seems to be getting into the electric car charging game. GE launched the WattStation last year, while Siemens, Silver Spring Networks, Clipper Creek, Ecotality, Coulomb, Better Place, NRG Energy, AeroVironment, Eaton, Leviton and GridBot, all have some version of the charger of their own.
Pile Research estimates that over tens of thousands of electric car chargers will be manufactured for the U.S. this year, reports Venture Beat.
President Obama has said he wants the country to have one million electric cars on the road by 2015, and while that number may be an over estimation — even if we get close to that number, it makes sense that everyone wants to make money while they can.
Toyota is expecting to sell about 20,000 to 30,000 home battery chargers to start with.
