China, as part of its bid to lead the way in the manufacturing of high-speed rail technology, has signed a deal with Argentina to invest $10 billion in the South American nation’s railways.

Compared to other countries’ national rail systems, Amtrak pales. Besides being too expensive, too limited in its reach and, usually, too slow, it also has annoying little quirks, like not being terribly friendly to bikes. Now it’s doing something about it. Amtrak has added bike access on several new stations between Washington, D.C. and Chicago.

One week after beginning service, Chinese officials have pulled the plug on a high speed rail line between the cities of Shanghai and Nanjing. The news doesn’t augur well for the California High Speed Rail Authority specifically, has spent much of this week deflecting criticism in the wake of two potentially damaging reports about its proposed $40 billion rail plan.
